MIDDLE EAST, April 17: Israel and Iran engaged in a tense exchange of threats following Tehran’s unprecedented direct strike on its longstanding adversary which unfolded in a region already on edge due to six months of conflict in Gaza.
Israeli military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari emphasized that Iran would face consequences for its actions, following a barrage of over 300 missiles, drones, and rockets launched at Israel by Tehran and its allies.
Iran justified its actions as self-defense in the wake of an airstrike on its consulate in Syria, stating that it would consider the matter closed unless Israel retaliated.
“The slightest action against Iran’s interests will definitely be met with a severe, extensive and painful response,” warned Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.
Meanwhile, the United States announced its intention to impose fresh sanctions on Iran’s missile and drone program in response to the recent attack on Israel as President Joe Biden reaffirmed the US’ support for Israel.
Additionally, the European Union signaled its readiness to impose punitive measures of its own through its foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, who expressed intentions to expand sanctions to the Islamic Republic, focusing on it weapons supply.
As of the present moment, Israel is evaluating its course of action, with the nature of its potential retaliation remaining uncertain.
Furthermore, it is unclear whether Israel will choose to conduct a direct strike against Iran or focus on targeting its interests or allies abroad, which may include locations in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen.-TVS
