Premier to address climate and energy forums in Poland

KUCHING, April 18: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg will take part in forums adressing global climate and renewable energy concerns in Poland next week.

He is set to discuss Sarawak’s stance and actions concerning energy transition, renewable energy assurance, decarbonization, and environmental sustainability during the Central European Hydrogen Technology Forum and the Central European Decarbonization Forum scheduled to take place in Poznań, Poland, on April 24 to 25.

On Thursday (Apr 18), the Sarawak Premier’s Office announced that Abang Johari is scheduled to travel from Britain to Poland on Friday (Apr 19).

According to the statement, he will participate as a panel member in a session titled “Debate Regions for the Planet,” scheduled from 11am to noon local time on April 24.

Accompanying the Premier will be Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Haji Awang Tengah Ali Hassan, who is also the Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment; State Secretary, Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Abu Bakar bin Marzuki and Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Dr. Hazland bin Abang Hipni.

During their three-day transit in the UK, the Premier and his entourage are slated to visit the Drax Power plant in Selby, North Yorkshire on Apr 21 (Sunday).

“This plant plays a crucial role in meeting 11 percent of the UK’s renewable power demands through the utilization of biomass pellets, boasting a generating capacity of 3,960 megawatts,” the statement said.

On the following day, Abang Johari is scheduled to observe the signing and exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Sarawak’s SMD Semiconductor Sdn Bhd and Britain’s Compound Semiconductor Applications Catapult in London.

“Through the MOU, Sarawak seeks to forge collaboration with its UK partner to drive innovations that would reshape the capabilities and applications of compound semiconductors that are made from two or more elements as compared to silicon that is made from a single element,” the statement added.-TVS
